A new report from Nationwide Building Society has revealed a noticeable increase in gambling spending across the United Kingdom, highlighting how a packed calendar of major sporting events in 2026 is expected to drive even more activity in the months ahead.
According to the latest data released by Nationwide, the total value of gambling-related spending by customers increased by 9% year-on-year in January 2026. At the same time, the number of gambling transactions also rose by 7%, indicating that more people are actively participating in betting and gaming activities.
The findings are based on a survey conducted by research firm Censuswide, which gathered responses from around 2,000 UK gamblers. One of the most striking insights from the survey is the spending behaviour of high-value players. The data shows that the top 10% of gamblers spend an average of £745 per month, reflecting a significant concentration of spending among a relatively small group of users.
Major Sports Events Expected to Boost Activity

The UEFA Champions League was cited by 34% of participants, while 30% specifically pointed to the Champions League final as a key event likely to influence betting behaviour. Meanwhile, the prestigious horse racing festival Royal Ascot was mentioned by 20% of respondents.
These results suggest that major global and national sporting events continue to act as powerful drivers of gambling participation in the UK.
Entertainment Remains the Main Motivation
While sports events encourage betting activity, the survey also explored the motivations behind gambling behaviour. For most participants, gambling is primarily viewed as a form of entertainment.
Around 53% of respondents said they gamble for entertainment, while 46% reported that the thrill of winning was their main reason for participating. However, the report also highlighted some concerning motivations.
Approximately 18% of respondents said boredom drives their gambling behaviour, while 17% admitted they gamble because they need additional money to cover essential bills. Furthermore, 6% of participants stated that gambling had negatively affected their standard of living, highlighting potential financial risks for some individuals.
Growing Interest in Online Games and Digital Entertainment
Beyond sports betting, online games and digital entertainment products are also becoming increasingly popular among UK players. Many gamers are exploring visually engaging slot-style experiences that combine entertainment with the possibility of winning rewards.

Rising Concerns Among Support Organisations
The charity GamCare also supported Nationwide’s concerns, noting that gambling problems often lead to wider personal challenges. These may include financial difficulties, mental health issues, and relationship breakdowns.
GamCare reported that its National Gambling Helpline experienced a 48% increase in referrals in January 2026 compared with the previous year, indicating a rising demand for support services.
Despite these concerns, broader industry data shows that gambling participation in Great Britain remains widespread. Government statistics suggest that nearly half of UK adults reported gambling activity during 2024.
Interestingly, attitudes toward gambling remain mixed. An October report found that 42% of people who gambled within the past year described the experience as positive, while 21% reported negative experiences.
Balancing Entertainment and Responsibility
As gambling and online gaming continue to grow across the UK, the challenge for the industry will be balancing entertainment value with responsible practices.
