A new Novarum study has revealed that the FIFA World Cup 2026 is creating an unexpected opportunity for the online betting industry. According to the research, sports betting activity increases by 60% to 150% during mandatory hydration breaks compared to regular match play, making these short pauses one of the most valuable engagement windows of the tournament.
The expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup, combined with mandatory cooling and hydration breaks, has effectively divided matches into additional engagement moments. Novarum’s analysis suggests that these breaks are no longer just about player welfare—they are becoming prime opportunities for betting operators to capture audience attention.
The study also tracked Google Search interest for official betting sponsors during the Argentina vs. Austria match. Betano recorded a search index of 54.4 before kickoff, which climbed to 69.8 during the first hydration break and peaked at 82.7 during the second break. Once play resumed, searches dropped sharply before recovering slightly after the final whistle.
A similar trend was seen for BetWarrior, whose search interest jumped from 2.9 before kickoff to 21.8 during the first hydration break and 23 during the second. Meanwhile, Betsson, which was not featured as a broadcast sponsor, showed no significant spike during hydration breaks, highlighting the importance of on-screen visibility.
Interestingly, a clear pattern is also emerging among players—many are switching to fast-paced crash games during these short breaks. Legendary titles like Aviator, alongside newer favourites such as Stormy Witch and Chicken Barnyard Rush, are becoming popular choices while fans wait for the action to resume.
With betting searches rising by as much as 150% in just a few minutes, hydration breaks are proving to be far more than a cooling pause. They are quickly becoming one of the hottest digital betting moments of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
